Welcome to issues when he seventeenth thank you it's good to be back many of these have we done. Around me here now I've been around for awhile I think I think we've probably done as many as I've been hearing held down and that's been quite a few years I hate to admit. The member okay. How long have you held the executive director job there it to. Get securities Y and coming up on my one year anniversary so April 4 and in fact I think that was the last time I was here and visit with you a little bit I was brand new to the world. Before that you put in a few years as director of the lord's diner I think that's where united Arab really first met nice at his horse and this is an interesting thing let me get this. This woman in here and find out about it do you spend quite a few years of Lorne Steiner. Yeah I was there about nine and a half the lord's diner opens in 2002. When I was one of the original. Cast of characters so to speak as far as staff people. Left there into when he eleven and went over to Catholic Charities is the director of development before becoming the safety directory year ago. We should look at the lord's diner over the years and and if I had tests be labeled a success they're feeding how many people do you think every night at 100000 is now oh yeah add ultimately yes they have two standalone sites three mobile tracks. And just in early January they opened to location down in Pittsburg Kansas Wendy Ide. I don't know about one of the CDs are doing with this kind of thing but it. I don't think using the match that is there an out in nearly anywhere I don't think to the. Capacity that the lord's diner is serving. I know there and other cities that have soup kitchens. They're models in some ways are are similar but not as diverse I guess most of them meet their focus on the mobile pantry. Or the standalone site bricks and mortar side and I think the unique thing about the lord's diner here in Wichita is that they do both. Now is there any government help involved in and no not all done through the diocese now all of them volunteers from other states as well sure absolutely I think that's the beautiful thing about the lord's diner is it is sponsored by the Catholic diocese but. Very ecumenical nature is related to the volunteers town and to the donors and we'll Catholic Charities covers a lot of territory. How many programs or services fallen your umbrella. No we have fourteen programs in nine different locations. And served threw out 25 counties of south central and southeast Kansas. And our programs are as diverse as does that we serve. Every thing Fram homeless shelters to adult daycare facilities. Working with immigration and feeding hungry we try to cover all of those a little bit this morning and do it do you have a mission emissions saved under revision for. Or cafeteria we do it's it's pretty broad comic inspired by God's love Catholic Charities diocese of Wichita works to alleviate poverty and build strong families. Let's fix in a lot of territory. It laughs and says it's kind of a balcony overview of all the different lines that we just takes too long to say if they. It was easy to memorize a how many employees DF com we have about a 150 that includes all of our floor full time part time and experienced staff. And in the outlying areas not quite as many staff most of that staff is here and such can hear. And this again this is entirely financed by the Catholic which taught diocese. Little bit actually when you could I'm thinking of the program you could estimate there. And now we actually have three different distinct funding streams. Part of it is Philanthropic dollars part of it is some of our programs or fee for service people actually have to pay to receive the services. And then we do receive a fair amount of government grants as well. Particularly for our domestic violence shelter harbor house which most people are very familiar with here in the community in Iran for about 25 years. And we also get federal dollars to support. Some of our outreach services again that served both veterans and domestic violence victims so what is your geographic areas of service. 25 counties. Again a week ago as are no more at as the McPherson area. As far west. And is Kingman. And then all the way again in the southeast Kansas we actually have a location to expert kansas'. How many people do you think you'd you opening years there anyway to figure out he's definitely. Aren't. Where you get down there weren't data junkies so. We keep lots of data last year just over fifteen house. And those are and duplicated members that means that somebody comes in and is actually served by multiple programs. We only count them ones now 151000 plus. And. That's and how many services and programs again fourteen different program with Jim Norton. Are you affiliated with the united players you part of that umbrella we are we've received about between seven an eight. Percent of our findings from the united way not for all of our programs specifically just five of them. Are two homeless shelters harbor house insane Anthony family shelter. We have a counseling program and an adult daycare facility that united way funds allow us to charge. Services on a sliding fee scale. And then we also have a mentoring program called the Foster grandparent program that we get some funding from united way to support. Well it's this start with. Talking about the programs from hunger OK tech. You talked about the lord's diners or Steiner part of what you do is not separate the ad. That is separate on although we are. Serve at the discretion of the bishop. We are a separate 501 C three. And the lord's diner falls under the dialysis and number Alice. And they are not one of our programs that we do have a feeding program its food pantry what is our daily food I get our daily bread hate the answer is a daily written. Out. And it is actually the program that serves the most people sell of the 151000. Plus that we served last year. About 121000 of them came through the food pantry. How does that work what looked at a studio Panthers and everything we have nonperishable food items as well as. Fresh produce we get that from the Kansas state bank warehouse. And also frozen meat items. And families can calm and be served there's no eligibility requirements. They do have to brings some documentation. Like. Photo ID proof of income. Or something to show where they live actually and again we talent. We don't decide not to serve them based on whatever your income is or isn't. And then proof of everybody that's in there home. And they can come once a month. And usually the amount of food that they're provided each time they visit should last them anywhere from four to five decades. We get a lot of these donations from the Catholic parishes from local businesses. And and do some fundraisers as well. So you get some support from local business. So where is that located his 12825. South hillside OK so just south of upon me there's actually just. A little trifecta of ministries stand there the lord's diner has a location down there. As does Guadeloupe a clinic which is the health clinic for the uninsured and then our daily bread food pantries they're also so all three ministries co locate. Now you do a lot of work in the area of domestic violence let's start with harbor households about harper. That time is probably. What we term our flagship program. People know. Catholic Charities for harbor house a lot of times they don't know it's a Catholic Charities program that it is. We opened in 1992 you. We serve women and men. And children who are fleeing domestic violence situation. So the kid has come with their mom their dad if they're seeking shelter and safety. And we open that program in 1992. On average we serve. I'm between three and 400 people annually out of out of harbor house about 50% of them are children sell a lot of those. Women who're seeking shelter come with their whole family with their children. It in the state and average linked to stays about 37 days. We have had women with their kids stay longer and you use the kind of help that it's about their feet out of the Lesotho wage exactly we have a full time women's counselor we have a full time children's counselor. As well as advocates that help them find permanent housing and employment. And so when they come and the first thing we do is address their basic needs if they need clothing if they need. Hygiene products that we need to connect him out with a physician and where some sort of medical care. And then once we've addressed those physical means those basic means that we can begin. I'm working alongside them to help them heal. From the abuse that they've suffered and that's where the counselors coming in and and the employment specialists and that. Housing specialists Wendy can you take care of everybody compute or we know just say that yeah. We have a big job we have a crisis line com and on average for word not able to bring in to shelter about fifty women. Or inquiries for shelter each and every month. When we don't have room at the eons so to speak we really work with them over the phone to develop a safety planned. I'm so what are the things that you can do to ensure your safety until we do you have forum. And a lot of those things are gathering together all of year. Paperwork as far as birth certificates. Drivers slice and he'd just hang out of sciences don't make it known known absolutely and I and there are various one other domestic violence program in the community that we also referred. To a forceful. And we collaborate with them quite as. Now what is old VW transitional house has cell OV EWS an Akron him in the world of social service there's lots of Akron and and it stands for the office of violence against women OK so it's federal dollars that come down. To us in order to help provide funding for housing is when are you VW green is directed toward. Being able to help the women. With their first deposited on housing paying the first month's rent you know getting those deposits so that they can get utilities. Turned on and things like that. And then to provide support for several months afterwards as there. Working and saving money in being able to be more self sufficient. Tell us about the safe. Safe project is pretty exciting for us because. Again and it's dollars that come down through the state government grants. On any. So we actually have case managers that spend time directly in the DCF offices. Throughout our entire 25 counties so were able to serve women. Who are either Montana. Or if there are not getting temporary assistance for needy families Catholic and it's against our. But they have some sort of domestic violence in their background we can also serve them. And it really allows us to provide support for victims and survivors of domestic violence. Outside it said two academy area. You get quite a bit of work with the homeless. Telus so when he tells about the Saint Anthony family shelter. So that is our homeless shelter for families and what that means is you have to have children. In order to move in there we don't serve single man or single women Saint Anthony family shelter. There are other shelters in our community that do that. But our focuses Saint Anthony has to really try to address. Those that are homeless as a family. They have different needs is a homeless family and one single individuals do. The structure of the facility itself is set up to be able to provide those services so instead of splitting them up or putting them in. Congregants sleeping rooms. They have their own faintly sweet. So it has a little living room area and then sleeping area and a private. Bathroom facilities for each family. And again the key pieces that case management services so. Assigning them with the case manager that helps them address the barriers that have caused them to become homeless. Average linked to stay there is a little shorter it is a thirty day program unlike harbor house where we let them stay a little bit longer. Com and the goal is so that the families can exit into permanent house. Now you have supportive services for veterans and correct yes we do again that's the federal grants. And it is working win at homeless veterans. Who have been chronically homeless there's a lot of comes stipulations that come with those Korean dollars. That really trying to work with the veterans that are out on the street. And get them into permanent housing so that the day often they just need to be connected with there. Benefits through this the day sometimes they need additional services. Health care services even help with furniture and things like that so again our case managers work with them one on one. I'm putting them into permanent housing what is them out. Of them now it is are. Transitional. Or extended stay shelters so if you're at Harbour house or your at Saint Anthony family shelter. Or even if your. Staying in one of the other domestic violence shelters and our community. And it's time for you were to move out of those emergency shelters year emergency has passed but you just need a little bit more time to save up some money. Maybe two. Get a job maybe you have lots of applications out there haven't secured that position that's gonna help you. Get into. A permanent housing situation and be able to afford it. Get to go to the mountains and a little bit longer. Improvise and get help from us. In the way of case management services. Tell us about Catholic Charities were with disabled adults. Adult day services. We have to program to locations actually. Both on the west side of tan. And we serve adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. And we also have it aging seniors. Program and they co locate in the facilities. And the goal of that is to try to keep both populations. Out of institutional care a lot of those that are being served as adult day services. Their family members are keeping them at home in caring for them. But those family members need to go to work during the day. And so it's a place where making down there medications or monitors that are meals are provided. And lots of funds social activities as well. We'll tell me about posture and that that again is to grant funded program through the federal government. And it provides opportunities. For low income seniors. To mentor and B match to win and children who. Have special learning needs with in the public schools here in our area as well as in our homeless shelters. Because the grandparents. Are at or below the poverty level there is a small stipend. That and they're also paid for the time that they spend with the kids in the schools. So it's a real win win program because grandparents benefit from being out about in the community. And the kids benefit from having grandparent is lament over many of them on May be more fortunate enough to agree and here. As a Catholic charity do work in the area of the race. We do and and that's one of the programs that I'm learning a lot about. As a result. Our our recent election a lot of publicity and then a lot of publicity and so. Our program. Is one that helps individuals that are here in this country and document and to get there legal status to become document and hand. To get their green card and become permanent residents. We also help facilitate. A program called doc and again that's an Akron and that stands. And or deferred action for child bitter rivals I have to. Take notes and and remember all. And that's something that began back in June of two when he twelve. And it's focused on certain undocumented. Immigrants who Kennard as minors into this country. And they're able to receive a renewable two years deferred action from actually being deported. So it's really targeted toward. Those who currently hearing high schooler and college. And and being able to have and continue. To be pursued their education or to get jobs. It does not provide them with lawful status. Or a path to citizenship. I'm but the goal at the program is really too and removed them from the focus and the immigration. And control enforcement here in and to make Pamela low priorities. Oh. When that the bill went into effect. Where they act went into effect. It was estimated that there was about one point seven million individuals that fell within dance. This population. And since June at 2016. About 844. Als of these individuals. Nationally. Have received its deferred action and capability. And about 50% of those either resign in the state Californians cortex. So we don't see a lot of that but we do help. Provide the answer what you do in the area disaster recovery. You know we've been very fortunate in this area that we haven't had a lot of disasters lately knock on words. But while we do in the case of the disaster is where a long term. Service providers. What that means is after the Red Cross leaves after the Salvation Army leaves. After that core of volunteers that come through and clear away all the debris. Are done with there work and there are usually in on site for about two weeks and Catholic Charities comes in. After the fact and helps provide that case management. Some financial support in order to help people get back on and eat. I'm a talk a little bit about your fundraising efforts a start with cruise night retrieve we had here which for just a few weeks ago it. But as cruise night. SO Chris Knight is an annual fundraiser we just completed the 24 annual. And you and Ted were out mean were are in season did a great job that ninety cute it was a great way to raise money for our shelter services out an app for how long that was 24 years owner yeah next year a B or 25 and more already. As soon as we put that one too bad we are ready are starting anew and yes starting to talk about what cruise nights twenty. Eighteen will look like cell. Typically are raises between 220 in 250000. Dollars in support of bar on all our programs yes snow. Yeah and again focused on the shelter other fund raiser would be and the other event that we have is called Baxter riches it's a lady's purse auction. And that happens in the summer months bags to riches now we have lots of designer purses that town swimming can come and sometimes if you meant coming in as well. Have been the course fewer and as you are a businessperson for years you've been doing this kind of work. If you will that. For many years what what it would get you excited about it Wendy black white you do this every day. You know I I really. Enjoy the opportunity to educate people about the needs of of those in our communities to. May be a little bit less fortunate. I know I'm growing up and being in for profit world I was very blessed and and never really understood the challenges interiors of people who are in poverty many of those in poverty for generations. And so being able to educate donors educate volunteers. To educate the general public about. Come wise some times people are in that for no. Fault of their own yeah Anna and how how those barriers may be keep them. In poverty and and how we as folks who. Aren't suffering can help. Now I know that you really depend on volunteers for a lot of what you do. How can people volunteer a really good for more by the way. Absolutely we're always looking for more volunteers she can call our main office 2648344. And you can sign up to become a volunteer right there on line. Bible says the poor will always be witness so when you look like your job security is pretty well. The taking care I I do have job security. But I would certainly like to see those numbers decrease and that's why I'm specifically in our mission statement as says alleviate poverty. We know realistically one never and it. We sure wanna try and work to alleviate it for a lot of people do you think you're gonna stay after for a for a year to more. Yeah I think I'll be back next year that any young person is ours and I just turned 58 and a you get a tape Furl for awhile longer than now I'd I'd love to come back next year and celebrate my and a second anniversary is exempt director okay we'll have you back on here will do it the issues program again next year and look forward till now this is one year that you've been the director and that's current and that you had a good year then I.
